An organization formed to preserve the historical and environmental assets of Alcove, New York.
Who we are:
The Alcove Preservation Association (APA) was incorporated in 1995 as a not-for-profit corporation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and was chartered as an education corporation in 1998 by the New York State Education Department
APA is non-partisan and non-political in dealings with Town and County Governments. Fundraising through our Annual Alcove Day in late April, our chicken barbecue in late summer, and receipts of membership dues and donations support our activities and the costs of mailings and reporting our activities to members.
APA was instrumental in the restoration of the Alcove Cemetery fence and working with the Open Space Institute to establish the Valley Paper Mill Park, Which APA manages jointly with the Town of Coeymans.
APA pursues grants from local government and private organizations to advance projects in the Alcove Historic District, which is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Meetings of the APA Board of Directors, held on the third Thursday of each month except February and December, are open to the public.
Our Mission
The association’s key interests are:
- Gathering information about the history and ecology of the area for distribution to the general public and our local schools;
- Providing a forum for discussion of local matters of concern and bringing those concerns to the attention of appropriate levels of government;
- Encouraging public interest and participation in projects to preserve, restore, and enhance historical, recreational, educational, and environmental resources in and around the Alcove Historic District;
- Exploring opportunities to secure grants and other government funding for the maintenance, improvement, and expansion of local parks, recreational and educational programs;
- Learning what other citizens groups, town government, county, state, and federal agencies are doing that can be of benefit to us locally, and working with others in areas where our interests are similar.
